A website redesign checklist for Canadian small businesses

A small business website redesign should make it easier for a customer to understand your offer and take the next step. A new theme can improve appearance, but it will not resolve unclear services, missing proof or a broken enquiry form.

For a Canadian service business, start with one question: what should a relevant visitor be able to do within a minute of arriving? That answer becomes the basis for your navigation, homepage and launch checklist.

1. Decide what a successful visit looks like

Choose a primary action for each important page. A consulting business may need a qualified enquiry; a local contractor may need a phone call; a product business may need a purchase. Keep secondary actions, such as viewing a portfolio, available without giving everything equal weight.

  • Name the main audience and the problem they are trying to solve.
  • Write the action you want them to take.
  • Record how you will measure that action, with suitable consent settings for analytics.

2. Audit the content before designing

List your current pages, their purpose and whether the information is accurate. Mark pages to keep, rewrite, combine or retire. Gather service details, real project images, approved reviews and contact information before finalising the layout.

A useful service page explains who the service is for, what is included, how the project works and how to enquire. Replace vague promises with specifics that your business can support. If you serve London, Ontario, say so clearly and explain your actual service area rather than creating near-identical pages for dozens of cities.

3. Preserve useful search paths

Record existing page addresses and the new destination for any address that changes. Plan permanent redirects where there is a relevant replacement. Update navigation and internal links so visitors and search engines reach the intended page directly.

Write a descriptive title and main heading for each page, then use natural subheadings to organise the content. Google recommends useful, readable content and links that help people understand and explore a website. Its SEO Starter Guide is a helpful reference. A plugin can support this work; it cannot guarantee a ranking.

4. Review the layout on a real phone

Check the navigation, headings, image crops and buttons at narrow widths. Cards should form complete rows at the chosen breakpoints, then stack in a readable order on mobile. Test longer service names and real content, not only short placeholder text.

Look for horizontal scrolling, tiny tap targets, clipped text and floating chat buttons that cover page controls. Keep essential text in HTML rather than embedding it in a graphic.

5. Test the complete enquiry journey

Submit a clearly labelled test enquiry. Verify validation, spam protection, the success message and delivery to the right destination. Check phone and email links, booking links and any confirmation emails. Seeing a form on the page is only the first part of this test.

6. Launch with a recoverable plan

  • Keep a current backup of the database and site files.
  • Confirm the site is indexable and important pages have the intended canonical address.
  • Check the sitemap, redirects, broken links and missing images.
  • Review the homepage, service pages, portfolio and contact page after caches are cleared.
  • Assign an owner for future updates and enquiries.

After launch, review actual search queries and enquiry quality. Improve the pages that answer real customer questions instead of repeatedly replacing the whole design.
